Safe in the Sun

Have you taken your Ovelle today?

One of my top skin supplements is Ovelle from Lamelle, with the active ingredient Pygnogenol. If there was only one skin supplement I could afford to take this one would be it. Its properties range from acting as an internal sun protector, to reducing pigmentation and increasing the quality of the skin.

Below are some great medical statistics based on take 2 capsules per day:
The effects of Ovelle capsules by taking two a day for 3 months on a dry skin

1.    Women with dry skin had a 21% improvement in the skin
2.    It increases the skin’s hyaluronic acid by 44%
3.    It increases water retention in the skin by 44%
4.    Increases the skin’s elasticity by 63%

The effects of Ovelle capsules on hormonal hyperpigmentation by taking two a day for 30 days

1.    80% of users had an improvement in their hormonal pigmentation
2.    37% improvement in hormonal pigmentation area
3.    Reduced hormonal pigmentation darkness by 22%
4.    It increases the skin’s resistance to the sun by 60-84%

The effects of Ovelle capsules on Menopausal women taking  three Ovelle a day for 8 weeks

1.    Experienced a 65%  reduction in hot flushes
2.    32% reduction in night sweats
3.    There was a 47% improvement in libido
4.    Women experienced a 27% reduction in fatigue
5.    42% reduction in depressive symptoms
6.    Experienced a 62% reduction in anxiety
7.    There was a 55% reduction in irritability

Ovelle also now contains Vit D3. Which means by taking your 2 capsules of Ovelle per day you now also get your daily dosage of Vit D3.

My personal experience with Ovelle while travelling through Italy and Croatia during their hottest time of the year is taking two split dosages of Ovelle; 2 in the morning and 2 in the evening; this protected my skin from sunburn as well as giving me healthy, glowing skin.

Travel Diaries 4: You've arrived!

SLEEP AND BE CALM

Use your flight time to rest, relax or meditate. Make sure to bring along items that will help you feel comfortable: I like taking my own
  • Travel pillow
  • Flight mask
  • Bose headphones and
  •  iPod.
Doing this will help you to unplug from the current environment and get into the mood for sleeping and relaxing, which will help you reach your new destination refreshed and well rested.

KEEP IT FRESH

There is nothing as bad as arriving at your destination with a stale breath and the complimentary toothbrush and toothpaste set given on planes are notorious for not doing the job properly. I am a big fan of my Slim Sonic mini travel toothbrush. It really does the job at 22 000 strokes per minute and it comes with a protective cap to keep the brush head clean and germ free. Remember to pack travel size toothpaste.

PUCKER UP

My lips always get really dry and flaky during a long haul flight. My best lip balm by far is the one from Dr.Hauschka. I have honestly never found another lip balm as nourishing and hydrating.

LANDING

No-one wants to step off the plane looking like a Night Of The Living Dead extra, when the plane is coming in to land I freshly apply my tinted moisturiser and touch up areas that need it using my Yves Saint Laurent Touché Eclat Radiant Highlighting Pen.

  • Also handy is a mini travel hairspray to sort out any bird nest situations.

HAPPY AND SAFE TRAVELS!

Go Green for Gorgeous Glowing skin

There are 3 things to focus on when you’re working toward getting glowing, gorgeous skin that looks healthy and vibrant:

  • Putting the right nutrients in

  • Pulling the toxins out

  • Adding Hydration -  it’s critical!

INTRODUCING: THE GREEN SMOOTHIE

The Green Smoothie (GS) is a great way to address all 3 of the above points as well as incorporate tremendous amounts of greens into your diet (far more than just eating your veggies).

A cup of the this contains over 3 cups of dark leafy green vegetables, which is more than many people get in a week! (I have 1 – 2 cups per day and it really doesn’t taste bad at all. )

Greens have more valuable nutrients than any other food group on the planet. Blending helps make greens’ full spectrum of nutrition readily available to the body. Nutrients are encased inside plant cells and getting their benefits requires these cells’ walls to be ruptured.

Greens need to be worked down to a creamy consistency, but most people simply don’t chew enough. Blending addresses this problem, helping your body absorb the maximum amount of nutrition from your greens.

I generally recommend starting out consuming around 1 ½ cups of the GS per day, then working up to 2 ½ cups daily or more. The GS is easy and quick to make. The only equipment you need is a blender (and a glass pitcher if you make large amounts and need to store some in the fridge).

The advantage of making a big batch is time and convenience. The GS will keep in your refrigerator, as long as it’s covered, for about two and a half days. You can also freeze portion sizes of it in glass containers and thaw out the night before.

Ongoing cleansing is a critical way to reach your highest potential of health and beauty. The GS retains all of the fibre of the greens and fruit, rather than removing it. In nature, vegetables and fruit are found with both their fibre and juice intact, and we can’t improve on nature.

Fibre is critical for ongoing cleansing by sweeping out toxins on a regular basis, helping to keep your digestive tract and body clean, and also keeping you fuller so that you tent to eat less heavier and/or acidic foods throughout the day.

Note: I encourage you to mix and match your greens and fruit. Just avoid melons, as they don’t combine well with other produce.

Ingredients:

1½-2 cups (360-480 ml) water

340g organic romaine lettuce, rough chopped, about 1 head

½ head large bunch or ¾ small bunch organic spinach

3-4 organic celery stalks, halved

1 organic apple, cored, seeded, quartered

1 organic pear, cored, seeded, quartered

1 organic banana, peeled (optional)

½ fresh organic lemon, peeled, seeded

bunch organic cilantro with stems (optional)

bunch organic parsley with stems (optional)

Place water, romaine, spinach, celery, and optional ingredients, if using, into your blender in the order listed and secure lid.

Blend; then add apple, pear, banana and lemon. Blend again.

Serving size: About 1.8 litres

Enjoy! You are on step closer towards glowing, gorgeous skin.

Prevent, Protect, Correct

I visited the Phi clinic in Harley Street and brought back the latest information in non-invasive aesthetic procedures. I also have the privilege of doing advanced SkinCeuticals training at the SkinCeuticals Centre of Excellence located here at the Phi Clinic. Harley Street has been noted since the 19th century for its large number of private specialists in medicine and surgery. Today it is also famous for its world class non-invasive cosmetic, aesthetic and medical procedures.

SkinCeuticals is a brand I love to be associated with. As a brand they offer results driven products backed by solid scientific studies. As a skincare therapist there is nothing I love more than proven, great results and working with a brand that is dedicated to promoting Skin Health.

SkinCeuticals was founded in 1997 by Dr. Sheldon Pinnnell. He discovered the first stable topical Vitamin C serum, pioneering the advent of cosmeceutical skin care. Today, 17 years later, SkinCeuticals has changed the way the skincare industry views skin protection and rejuvenation.

One of the main causes of premature aging is free radical damage (UV rays, pollution, stress, smoke, lifestyle choices). Anti-oxidants have become a key component in combatting premature aging caused by free radical damage. For example wearing a sunscreen alone only offers 55% protection against harmful UV rays, where as a sunscreen combined with an anti-oxidant serum offers up to 98% protection.

UVA rays also cause 78% of skin aging all year round. While it's understood that taking sun safety precautions during the summer months is a must, many people don't realize they need to protect their skin year round, even when indoors. The temperature may drop in winter and the sunlight may be less intense, but the amount of UVA rays remains constant throughout the year. Applying topical anti-oxidants are therefore important in fighting this UV induced aging.

SkinCeuticals has 3 main pillars of skin care to maintain and improve skin health:

PREVENT signs of premature skin ageing by neutralizing free radicals.

PROTECT healthy skin from harmful UV rays through sunscreen filters (UVA and UVB).

CORRECT previous damage to restore a youthful appearance and radiant complexion.

I look forward to bringing you more of this ground breaking technology and innovative products at Libi Roos Skincare Clinic.

Travel Diaries 3: For your eyes only

FOR YOUR EYES ONLY

Eyes tend to look red, tired and puffy after a long haul flight. My favourite product to combat this is Bright Eyes from EyeSlices. One pair can be used for up to 10 times and it doesn’t need to be stored in the fridge to have a cooling effect on your eyes. The flower extracts of White Lily helps to hydrate the skin, while the Black Elder extract helps to reduce puffiness and dark circles. Apply and leave on for 10 – 15 minutes just before landing.

KEEP THESE HANDY: HAND WIPES AND STERILISER

These are an essential beauty buy to take on a plane because just about every surface you touch is full of germs, and you can easily transfer these to your face, where they can go to work causing break outs and blackheads. If you're touching the TV monitor, putting food in your mouth and applying creams to your face you're going to want to sterilise your hands.

HYDRATE

Make sure you hydrate your skin from within. Do it by drinking plenty of water or coconut water (rich in vitamins). I prefer drinking sparkling water as it contains more potassium than still water. The extra potassium helps to prevent water retention and swollen ankles during the flight. I also like to take some fizzy Vitamin C tabs with; I pop this into my water and then sip throughout the flight. The extra Vitamin C helps to boost my immune system and prevents picking up nasty bugs on the flight.

Movember Motivation

Steve Attwell heads up Embark training  and epitomizes healthy living. We are proud to announce that is our official Movember Ambassador.

We'll be documenting his Mo - Grow and taking extra special care of his skin all month.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in South Africa and it's important to be aware of the risks.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer occurs when some of the cells in the prostate reproduce far more rapidly than normal, resulting in a tumour.
If left untreated, prostate cancer cells may eventually spread from the prostate and invade distant parts of the body, particularly the lymph nodes and bones, producing secondary tumours in a process known as metastasis.
One of the most worrying aspects of the disease is that most prostate cancers develop without men experiencing any symptoms in the early stages.

What are the risk factors?

Gender: prostate cancer only affects men, as women do not have a prostate gland
Age: the older a man, the more likely he is to be diagnosed with prostate cancer
Family History: a man with a father or brother who developed prostate cancer before 60 is twice as likely to develop the cancer
Ethnicity: increased occurrence in black African and Afro-Caribbean males
Lifestyle: poor diet and lack of exercise

Every treatment you book with us this month, we will contribute R50 to the Movemeber Foundation. So do you bit and book today.
